Beginner Jiu Jitsu

New to jiu jitsu? You are welcome in every regular class from your first day. Our optional beginner class is there when you want a slower pace and more time on the basics.

Who This Class Is For

Most people who walk in have never trained anything, and you don't need to get in shape first. Beginners are welcome in every regular class from day one.

The beginner class is optional. It is for anyone who wants more focus on the basics, or who doesn't feel ready for the regular class yet. You can take it, the regular class, or both.

You set the pace, and your partners adjust to you. That is how we want BJJ for beginners to feel, whether you live in Aurora, Centennial or Parker.

What a Beginner Class Looks Like

A Slower Pace

We take our time with each position, so there is room to ask questions and understand why something works before moving on.

Fundamentals First

Class focuses on the basics: the core positions, escapes and movements that the rest of jiu jitsu is built on.

Less Live Rolling

There is less live positional work and rolling than in the regular class. You can always say no to a roll, and nobody will throw you into a hard one.

Before Your First Class

You don't need to buy anything to try it. Sign up online, sign your waiver, and tell the coach it's your first day. For gi class, we keep loaner gis for trial students. Here is what to sort out before you arrive.

  • Sign up online (free trial, takes 30 seconds)
  • Wear athletic clothing — rash guard or t-shirt, shorts or joggers
  • Trim fingernails and toenails
  • Bring water
  • Arrive 10-15 minutes early

How We Train

About 70% of class is games and situational work built from anchor points. The other 30% or so is direct technique, shown and drilled so you understand why it works, not just how.

That mix works if you like a clear technique path, and it works if you learn best by playing and figuring things out. Both kinds of learner train together in the same class.

We encourage exploration and talking with your partner about what worked, what didn't and what to try next. Jiu jitsu is explored here, not prescribed, and we like to try new things.
