Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before starting your jiu jitsu journey.

Getting Started

Where is DEN BJJ located?

+
We're at 16701 E Iliff Ave, Unit C-12, Aurora, CO 80013, on the lower level under Six Capital Brewing, just west of Buckley Rd and Iliff Ave.

Do you serve the Aurora, Colorado area?

+
Yes. We are based in Aurora, CO and train adults and kids from across the east Denver metro — including Centennial, Parker, and Englewood.

Do I need experience to start?

+
Nope. Most people who walk in have never trained anything.

Am I too old or out of shape to start Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

+
No. You don't get in shape to start jiu jitsu — jiu jitsu gets you in shape. Adults of every age and fitness level train here. You set the pace, and your partners adjust to you.

I'm nervous about my first class. What actually happens?

+
Everyone is. Sign up online, sign your waiver, and show up a few minutes early. Tell the coach it's your first day. You'll warm up, learn a technique, and drill it with a partner. Nobody will throw you into a hard roll.

What does the free trial include?

+
Seven days, unlimited classes. We don't ask for a card.

What should I wear to my first class?

+
For no-gi, a loose-fitting t-shirt and athletic shorts or pants. For gi class, we keep loaner gis at the gym for trial students, so you don't need to buy anything to try it.

Can women train at DEN BJJ?

+
Yes. Women train in every class we run, and you can always choose who you partner with.

Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu safe?

+
Yes. We teach you to tap early and train smart. Most people never get hurt.

Kids & Teens

What ages can train in your youth jiu jitsu program?

+
Right now our youth program is one class for all ages. As it grows, we plan to split it into a Tiny Grapplers class and a youth class. Kids develop at different speeds, so if we think your child will get more out of waiting until they're a little older, we'll tell you.

Can teens train in the adult classes?

+
Case by case. We sometimes invite experienced teens into adult classes. Families can bring their teens aged 13 and up to adult class without asking first, as long as they partner together. Either way, we reserve the right to say it isn't the right fit — we want every young grappler in the room where they'll get the most out of training.

Can parents watch kids classes?

+
Yes. Parents and guardians have a dedicated observation area to watch every class.

Gear & Etiquette

Do you teach gi or no-gi jiu jitsu?

+
Both. Check the schedule at https://denbjj.com/schedule to see which classes are gi and which are no-gi.

Do I need to buy a gi?

+
Not to start. We have loaner gis for trial students. When you decide jiu jitsu is for you, get your own — ask a coach if you want advice.

What are the hygiene rules?

+
Come to every class clean, in clean gear. Keep fingernails and toenails trimmed short. No chains, rings, earrings or other jewelry on the mats. Anyone with a skin infection of any kind, or an unexplained rash, stays off the mats until it has fully cleared.

Do I have to roll (spar)?

+
No. Anyone can say no to a roll, any time, no explanation needed.

Training

How often should I train?

+
Start with 2-3 times a week and see how you feel. You'll figure out your rhythm.

What's your training philosophy?

+
We teach you why things work, not just how to do them. You'll drill, spar, and figure out your own game.

Do you do competitions?

+
Compete if you want. We'll support you. But it's never required.

What's open mat?

+
It's just open sparring time for everyone. Always free.

What if I get injured?

+
Tell your coach before class. You can modify, drill only, or sit out rounds — and see a doctor for anything serious. We want you to heal, but we never want you to lose your third place. Jiu jitsu is a community, and we miss you when you're not around. Our Wounded Grappler program (coming soon) will let you pause your membership payments and still come hang out on the mats while you recover. Until it launches, just ask management and we'll adjust your monthly rate.

Belts & Progress

How do belt promotions work at DEN BJJ?

+
We promote based on understanding, not attendance. Coaches look at four things: time, dedication, skill, and how you contribute to a quality training room. Promotions happen several times a year, when the gym needs them, and we announce each one 60 to 90 days ahead so you and your family can plan to be there.

Do you give stripes?

+
Youth students earn stripes between belts. Adults don't — adult promotions go belt to belt.

How long does it take to get a blue belt?

+
There's no set timeline, because we don't promote on a class count. It comes down to how well you understand the game. Keep showing up, keep asking why, and talk to your coaches about where you are.

Where can I see my progress?

+
Log in and open Attendance to see your full training history. Ask your coach where you are on your belt journey.

Visitors & Private Lessons

Can I drop in if I train at another gym?

+
Yes, visiting grapplers are welcome. Create an account, sign the waiver online, and buy a drop-in at https://denbjj.com/membership before you come. Current prices are at https://denbjj.com/pricing.

Do you offer private lessons?

+
Yes, for members. Start your free trial to create your account, then log in and you'll find private lessons in our store.

Membership & Your Account

How much does membership cost?

+
Current prices for every membership and drop-in are at https://denbjj.com/pricing. No contracts.

Can I pause my membership?

+
Yes, and you can do it yourself. Log in, open Billing, and pause your membership there. Billing stops while you're paused, and you can resume from the same page whenever you're ready. Don't see the button — say, while a payment is past due? Email us at [email protected] and we'll sort it out.

How do I cancel?

+
Log in, open Billing, and cancel. No contracts, no hoops. Billing stops, and you keep training through the end of the period you've already paid for. Don't see the option? Email us at [email protected] and we'll take care of it.

Do you offer a family discount?

+
Yes. One member pays their normal membership, and every additional person in the same household is $100 a month. There is no minimum household size and no separate family plan to sign up for.

Who manages a family membership?

+
The household's primary member. They add family members, buy their memberships, and can pause or cancel each membership they pay for. Added family members can't change their own membership, so ask your primary member.

How do I update my card or get a receipt?

+
Log in and open Billing. You'll see every payment and can download a receipt whenever one is available. "Open billing portal" is where you update your card.

What happens if a payment fails?

+
You'll see an alert on your Billing page, with the reason when we have one. Update your payment method there so the next charge goes through, and reach out if you need a hand.

How do I book a class?

+
Log in, pick a class on the schedule, and RSVP if it takes bookings. If it's full, you'll go on the waitlist.

How do I update my email, phone or emergency contact?

+
Log in and open your Profile. You can change your details, emergency contact, password, and which emails we send you.

Safety & Safeguarding

How do I report a safety concern or misconduct?

+
Email our Designated Safeguarding Contact at [email protected] — put "Safeguarding Report" in the subject line — or use the report form at https://denbjj.com/safeguards. You can also contact the US Center for SafeSport at 1-833-587-7233, the Colorado Child Abuse Hotline at 1-844-264-5437, or RAINN at 1-800-656-4673. You do not need proof before reporting — a good-faith concern is enough.

What safety measures are in place for kids classes?

+
Security cameras are in operation throughout the training area at all times. Parents and guardians have a dedicated observation area to watch every class. No instructor will conduct one-on-one private instruction with a minor in any unobserved space — a second adult or parent must be present. All paid instructors complete background checks and SafeSport training before working with members.

Are instructors SafeSport trained?

+
Yes. All instructors complete SafeSport training, which covers mandatory reporting, sexual misconduct awareness, and athlete protection. Instructors are mandatory reporters under Colorado law and will report reasonable suspicion of child abuse or neglect to law enforcement immediately.

Does DEN BJJ have a formal safeguarding policy?

+
Yes. Our full safeguarding policy — including prohibited conduct, reporting procedures, and external resources — is published at https://denbjj.com/safeguards.
